Bringing Christmas Joy: A Mission Trip to the Dominican Republic

Late in the year of a whirlwind of missions, with the echoes of South Asia still ringing in our ears, we embarked on another life-changing journey - this time, to Los Guaricanos, in the Dominican Republic. With only a week to recover from our previous expedition, our hearts brimming with purpose, we dove headfirst into our annual child sponsorship Christmas mission.

This year, a team of 12 dedicated individuals, traveling from as far away as Arizona and as far north as Michigan. We invoked divine blessings for a smooth journey, and indeed, God answered our prayers as every team member arrived promptly, baggage in tow. Our sanctuary for the mission was a rented villa, chosen for its safety in a neighborhood that posed its own set of challenges.

Day one of our mission kicked off with fervor as we unpacked the duffel bags, each loaded with gifts for the children. Sorting them by age and gender and portioning out sacks of rice and beans occupied our time and hearts.

Day two unfolded as a whirlwind of emotions, where we dedicated ourselves to assembling over 200 gift baskets and orchestrating 25 heartwarming home visits. These visits granted sponsors the precious opportunity to step into the lives of their sponsored children within the comforting walls of their homes. The experiences ranged from joyful reunions to the tender initiation of first-time encounters.

It was a profoundly humbling experience, one that opened our eyes to the kaleidoscope of circumstances these children navigated daily. Among the 25 families we visited, only one child was fortunate enough to be living with both parents. The rest faced their own unique challenges, some living with grandparents, and others in the direst of circumstances. Yet, each of these children had been deemed worthy of child sponsorship after careful evaluation, a process that considered both their economic need and the presence of enough structure to ensure that the investment we were making would truly make a lasting difference in their lives.

As sponsors from a privileged first-world background, composure could be a challenge when confronted with such stark realities. Yet, we knew that we were there to be a beacon of light and love during the holiday season. While tears might have been shed in private moments, each of us embraced our responsibility wholeheartedly, determined to bring joy into the lives of these children.

Christmas party day was a kaleidoscope of activities, from church assemblies for two different age groups to capturing hundreds of Christmas portraits. The highlight was a planned pool party at our villa for all sponsored children and their visiting sponsors. Serving as the source of light and joy for these children was an unforgettable privilege. The pool party was a riot of activity with swim lessons, ball games, diving, and laughter resonating in every corner. An abundance of food and drinks delighted children who weren't accustomed to such luxuries. As the day drew to a close and the children left, it felt as though our world had lost its color and vibrancy, leaving us to grapple with the gamut of emotions we had experienced.

Perhaps the most important lesson we carried home was witnessing how easily those with so little could find joy in life's simple pleasures. For those of us accustomed to material abundance, it was humbling to see that true happiness often lies in places we've taken for granted.

Indeed, child sponsorship is a profound privilege that not only fills your life with joy but also transforms the life of a child in need. For a mere $35 a month, it's an investment that is guaranteed to bring you joy, while making a real difference in a child’s life.
