Standing Strong in Faith: The Imprisonment and Release of Our Pastor in South Asia
In recent weeks, our community faced a challenging and urgent trial as our beloved national pastor in South Asia was arrested on charges related to religious conversion. While the constitution of his country guarantees freedom of religion, current laws against “forced conversion” are increasingly used to target Christian leaders amidst a rising tide of hostility. Sadly, accusations alone have led to arrests, and our pastor became one among several facing persecution.
During his detention, our pastor endured harsh conditions—three nights without shoes, sleeping on a bare concrete floor, and going without food until the final day. While he was not physically harmed, he faced verbal abuse by the police throughout his imprisonment. In a remarkable show of solidarity, nearly 200 members of his congregation gathered outside the police station, risking arrest themselves.
When the police, astonished by this support, asked him, “How much did you pay these people to convert them?” he stood boldly in his faith and answered:
“Faith is a matter of the heart. You could pay me a million dollars and I would not convert to your religion. And there is no amount of money I could pay anyone to convert them. People are saved by grace—not by bribe or force.”
The police lacked the necessary context to understand the kind of radical generosity and support that defines Christian community. In their eyes, these acts of compassion were misinterpreted as attempts to buy conversions.
Remarkably, this witness of genuine faith and community compassion began to soften the hearts of the authorities. On the third day, his captors even brought him tea and breakfast. With the intervention of a local parliament member, and through the generosity of supporters who raised funds to reimburse congregants who loaned money for bail, our pastor was released on bail and returned safely home.
Despite the ordeal, he found strength in scripture, especially recalling Acts 16, and remained joyful and resolute in his faith. His experience is a testament to the courage and resilience of the church in the face of growing persecution in the region.
Looking ahead, our commitment remains firm to build a self-sustaining ministry that can thrive amidst adversity. We ask you to continue standing with us through prayer, advocacy, and support to expand our mission in South Asia. Your prayers for protection, wisdom, and provision are vital as we seek lasting peace and progress for our pastor, his family, and the local church.
Thank you for your steadfast faith and partnership during this critical time. Together, we move forward in hope and trust. If you feel led, please consider supporting this ministry.
